I was pretty serious about cycling for quite a few years (I got started with the Transcontinental Race from London to Istanbul), but recently decided to move on to another sport (still TBD). In the meantime I decided to try and leverage some of my cycling fitness to see what kind of a middle distance runner I could be if I dedicated myself to that goal for 16 straight weeks.
I understand this is not very much time to “become a runner”, but I also don’t like running enough to commit to it for years on end, and 16 weeks felt short enough to have more of an adventure feel than a grind.
I did a similar project with swimming (which I enjoy even less than running), with the goal of getting under 1 minute for 100 yards. At my final meet I managed 1:00.01.
